As usual the venue was packed and the bar staff looked run off their feet. Tonight the Dolfs had a support band who go by the name of Kyne. Kyne look about 17 years old, but play to capabilities of a much older band. The female vocalist in particular was excellent. They played mostly covers by the likes of Green Day, Stereophonics and Radiohead to name a few, along with 2 or 3 of their own songs. To be honest I was quite impressed. Angry Dolphin bounced on stage with their usual energy and brought the house down. I am not sure about their choice of tonights cover version, Scooby Doo??!!, but the crowd loved it and that is what counts. As always at the Regent, the sound was a little dodgy but the most pit at the front didn't notice, or maybe didn't care. The song quality still shone through. The Dolphinz were of course forced to play an encore and the crowd wanted "Fight for your right to party", the chosen cover of the last gig here. They got it alright, with the whole venue joining in on the chorus. A brilliant night all round. Any newcomers had to be impressed.
Sprotbro' Skateboard Event, Doncaster
Not the ideal place for Angry Dolphin to play, what with half the crowd sporting Slipknot t-shirts. The stage was the back of a lorry and the band played like they had just fallen off one. All the Slipknot mob didn't last long, which was a good thing. If you are impressing them you are doing something wrong. The Dolfinz played about 8 songs which were a little bit half hearted. I have seen them play much better in the past. The funniest moment was at the end, watching a stage invasion by about 20 girls aged between about 8 and 14 all clutching little bits of paper, crowding round the band members for autographs. They must have felt like Westlife for a few moments. Not bad for a bunch of ugly dolphins.
Parish Hall, Barnby Dun, Doncaster
About 150 people in this excellent venue. Tonight the Dolphins were supported by Kyne and the worst band I have ever seen Beachbuggy. I couldn't believe it when I heard that Beachbuggy were signed to Poptones, the label owned by Alan McGee who discovered Oasis. Beachbuggy emptied the room and I am only glad that most of them came back to witness a great Angry Dolphin performance. The Dolphins played a short set tonite and I was disappointed that they left out the excellent Summertime. There was the unusual site of a couple of teenage girls in front of the stage with home made Angry Dolphin signs. Are the Dolfs turning into a boy band? I have seen the stage invaded by young female autograph hunters on several occasions now and I still can't understand it. All the usual crowd pleasers were there - Liquid Satisfaction, Millennium, Everybody's Happy, Free Your Mind etc. The sound quality was a little dodgy and the vocals were a bit muffled but once again the quality of the songs and the stage presence of the band shone through. Alan McGee you have signed the wrong band!! Marks out of 10 tonight - Angry Dolphin 9, Kyne 7, Beachbuggy 0 (I would have given them 10 if they never turned up).
Arts Center, Gainsborough
I decided to travel to see the lads play as I had heard rumours that the last time they played here it was buzzin'. I arrived late and unfortunately missed the support band Kyne. Luckily I had a ticket for the gig as all 200 had sold out. It seems the kids of Gainsborough know a good sound when they hear it. All it needs now is for the rest of the world to wake up and discover the most refreshing new band since Oasis. The dolphins bounced on stage as the crowd bounced to the pumping vibe of the House of Pain classic "Jump Around". They kicked off with the excellent "You Said" and right from the start the audience were up for it, only slowing down when 2 young punk rockers were dancing too wildly. 90% of the crowd were under 21year olds and it was a great sight to see the band enjoying the kind of reaction they should have at every gig, over 100 young kids going wild in front of the stage. The inevitable happened when the band played " Everybody's Happy" with most of the people in the mosh pit trying to get on stage to join in on the chorus. The dolfs ended the show with "Fight for your right to party" as an encore and all I can say is "I wish I had taken my video camera".
